Fiji AG Sayed-Khaiyum Warns Against Budget Profiteering

The Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has warned retailers not to try to profit from the price increases on certain items announced in yesterday’s budget.

He said the Government was getting reports from some consumers that certain shops were charging increased prices on items not covered in the budget.

“We will not tolerate this kind of assault on ordinary Fijians by greedy shopkeepers. Anyone caught profiteering or fraudulently charging for exempted items will face the full force of the law”, The Acting PM and AG said.

“It is very disappointing to hear that some retailers have tried to take advantage of their fellow citizens. I got one report today that a retailer in Lautoka has increased the price of kerosene by two cents when the Prime Minister clearly stated in the budget yesterday that the Green Tax does not apply to kerosene, pre-mix and white benzene”, he said.

“This is a clear case of fraud”, the Attorney General said.
