Fijian Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum Holds Talks With EU Commissioner

The Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum met with the European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, His Excellency Mr Neven Mimica, in Suva today to discuss strategies for the implementation of projects to be funded through the European Development Fund (EDF).

The European Union through the 11th EDF National Indicative Programme (NIP), executed today by the Honorable Prime Minister and Commissioner Mimica, has allocated EUR28 million (FJD65 million) for the period 2014 – 2020. The Fijian Government has identified ”Sustainable Rural Livelihoods” and “Public Administration Reform and Governance” as the two primary focal sectors for support under the NIP allocation.

In extending his appreciation for the assistance provided through this allocation, the Attorney-General said this latest development will enable the Government to further empower and improve the living standards of Fijians.

“This assistance will enable us to do a lot more to empower ordinary Fijians through the Agricultural sector including the Sugar Cane industry. It will also strengthen our access to justice initiatives through the Legal Aid Commission. We are glad that the European Union is partnering with the Fijian Government to contribute to our overall development efforts. We have assured the EU that our project implementation will be carried out with efficacy and transparency”, the Attorney-General said.

Commissioner Mimica welcomed the opportunity to work with the Fijian Government and develop strategies for the implementation of projects through the EDF Grant.
