The Attorney-General and Minister for Communications, Honourable Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum (‘Attorney-General”) met with the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (“ITU”), Mr Brahima Sanou (“Director”) on 26 March 2015.

The Attorney-General took the occasion to thank the ITU for its increased collaboration with the Fijian Government in various areas including Fiji’s move from the analogue to digital platform.

The Director recognized Fiji’s progress and congratulated Fiji on the successful holding of its first truly democratic elections. The Director also sought Fiji’s support, given its position as the regional hub including in telecommunications, in furthering initiatives such as using ICT infrastructure in development.

The Director and the Attorney-General discussed ITU’s recent initiative to provide support to small and developing States in using new technologies and systems to assist with emergency telecommunication during natural disasters. The Attorney-General expressed keen interest in the initiative and stated that such technologies should be compatible with the systems of existing service providers. He also said that the Fijian Government will closely partner with ITU on such areas as it directly affects the region.
