Attorney-General Sayed-Khaiyum Continues Draft Constitution Briefings in North and West

The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is continuing public consultations on the draft constitution at a public meeting in Labasa tomorrow.

The briefing sessions began last week with a briefing by the Attorney-General at a meeting of the Catholic Women’s League of Fiji on the afternoon on April 2.

On April 3, the Attorney-General briefed a coalition of NGOs at the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre.

This was followed by the first public consultation with Rural Advisory Councillors, Roko Tuis, other Provincial Administrators, registered organizations, non-governmental organizations, and members of the public at JJ’s on the Park on April 4.

The next public consultation will be conducted by the Attorney-General on Monday April 8 at the Labasa Civic Centre, beginning at 9.30AM.

Then, on Wednesday April 10, the Attorney-General will be in Lautoka to brief the public at Tanoa Waterfront Hotel Conference Room.

“The public turn-out last Thursday was very encouraging,” the Attorney-General said. “We were able to dispel many misunderstandings, correct misinformation that is being circulated, and explain the rationale for the draft’s provisions.”

He said that there were many questions and comments raised in the various sessions. “We are happy to see that people are taking the time to read the draft constitution in-depth, and to discuss and debate different points. We have already received a large amount of thoughtful and honest feedback.”
